API Data Reporting
In September 2026, The Building and Plumbing Commission will activate its Application Programming Interface (API) as a method for reporting building permit data to BAMS.
This new API offering provides the opportunity for a direct connection between third-party building permit software systems and BAMS, limiting the need for users to manually log in to the BPC portal to report data.
Initially, APIs will be activated for Prescribed Event reporting and Case Creation, with new Building Permit Number and Amendment reporting being added in the following months.
What date will API reporting be launched?
API Reporting for Prescribed Events and Case creation will be made available on 17 September 2026, with new Building Permit Number and Amendment reporting being added in the following months.
The date that users will be able to report data to the BPC via API will depend on their software providers rollout of API functionality. There is no hard requirement for this to be in place on the launch date.
I develop Building Permit Software. How do I get set up?
If you are a building permit software developer with active Building Surveyor clients, or you are a Building Surveyor organisation with internally built and managed software and would like to activate API reporting, please contact buildingpermitsoftware@bpc.vic.gov.au
You will be provided with the relevant technical documentation and guidance to assist with setup.
How do I activate API reporting for my existing BAMS account?
Once your software provider has set up API reporting functionality, you will be required to complete an API Activation Form to obtain your Reporting Entity API Code.
Forms will be published on this page in early September.
How do I report data to BPC via API?
Every building permit software product will be different, depending on how API is integrated into the software. If you are using third-party building permit software, you may wish to contact your software provider for guidance.

Will data still be validated went sent via API?
Yes, data validations will be in place as part of API reporting and a response sent, to ensure certain required data is not missed.
This could relate to missing or incorrectly formatted fields, or issues with reported events. For example, a ‘PE14 Final Inspection’ will not be able to be reported, if a ‘PE10 Issuance of Building Permit’ has not yet been reported for the permit.
If I’m not ready to switch to reporting via API, can I still report data using the csv file or online portal methods?
Yes. The existing csv file and online portal reporting methods will still be available.
API reporting is simply being introduced as a more direct method of reporting data.
Does API reporting impact reporting requirements under Regulation 47?
No. While data reporting via API provides a simpler method for reporting data throughout the month, the legislative requirements under Reg 47 remain unchanged.
Is there a plan for the CSV and Portal reporting methods be decommissioned?
Not currently. Should this happen in the future, all BAMS users and software organisations will be notified well ahead of time to ensure a smooth transition.
