RBS statutory powers and referrals

As a Private Building Surveyor engaged as a Relevant Building Surveyor (RBS), you are on the front line of ensuring buildings in Victoria are safe and compliant. Your statutory responsibilities are central to protecting public health, safety, and amenity.

To carry out your role, you hold specific:

When you issue enforceable tools, make correct referrals, and notify us as required, we can back your decisions with clear regulatory action.

Taking these steps helps you meet your obligations and ensures the BPC can support you if matters escalate:

  • Apply enforcement tools appropriately
  • Maintain high standards in drafting and service
  • Escalate through statutory referrals
