State Building Surveyor Steven Baxas is warning Victorian building surveyors to ensure they maintain active oversight of inspections carried out on their behalf and regularly review inspection data and records.

Steven addressed the Victorian Municipal Building Surveyors Group annual state conference today in Yarrawonga with an update on the Building and Plumbing Commission’s investigation into the integrity and accuracy of inspection records.

The investigation follows an analysis of building permit data which revealed a number of anomalies and unusual patterns. This data is being validated through targeted field-based surveillance, background checks and other intelligence.

Steven says building surveyors should question activity that does not look right and ensure they have robust processes in place to verify the accuracy of records before they are submitted to the regulator.

The BPC won't hesitate to take strong enforcement action should the investigation determine records have been falsified.
