Implications of Industry 4.0 technologies on work practices

What we are doing and why

We are supporting research by the University of Melbourne, through the Building 4.0 Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), to identify the challenges and opportunities of emerging technologies, and what impact they have on workplace practice and working conditions, and the requirements for future workforce training.

Project outcomes will include recommendations to:

  • support the transition in work practices (especially in moving from onsite to offsite work)
  • guide the scope and focus of an effective skills training program
  • identify the issues and opportunities for employee working conditions posed by new technologies.

Together, these recommendations will contribute to the choice, design and integration of new technologies to create safe, satisfying and productive workplaces in building and construction.

The University of Melbourne’s Professor Frank Vetere is leading the research.

The project is jointly funded by the Building 4.0 CRC, the BPC and industry partners A.G. Coombs, Holmesglen Institute, Lendlease Digital Australia and Master Builders Association of Victoria.

What we have achieved so far

This research project commenced in July 2024 and is due for completion in 2025-26.
