Building 4.0 Cooperative Research Centre

What we did and why

The BPC is participating in the seven-year Building 4.0 Cooperative Research Centre , an industry-led research initiative co-funded by the Australian Government.

Building 4.0 commenced in 2020–21 and aims to address long-standing systemic challenges in the construction industry, including stagnant productivity, limited digitisation and adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies, and poor knowledge transfer.

Building 4.0 partners include:

  • Research organisations: Monash University, the University of Melbourne and Queensland University of Technology.
  • Government: the Victorian Building Authority (now the BPC) and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (Victorian Government).
  • Peak industry bodies and associations: Master Builders Victoria, the Green Building Council of Australia, PrefabAUS and Standards Australia.
  • Vocational education and training providers: Holmesglen Institute.
  • Commercial industry partners.

The BPC supports Building 4.0 because its research streams—sectoral, digital and building transformation—align with the BPC’s research priorities and help drive digital adoption and greater systemisation across the industry.

What we have achieved so far

Through our participation in Building 4.0, we are working closely with industry and research leaders who have advanced digital and technological expertise.

To date, we have collaborated with researchers, industry and other partners to develop projects of mutual benefit that focus on accelerating the adoption of digital and emerging technologies, increasing practitioners’ digital capabilities, and automating building processes.

Building 4.0 research projects that the BPC has contributed to, or is currently contributing to, include:

The research program is a key strategic platform that provides evidence to inform our regulatory decisions and drive improvements to the building regulatory system.

We continue to engage with researchers and industry to develop further projects relevant to the regulation of the building and plumbing industries in Victoria.
