Use and disclosure of personal information

We collect personal information through the Portal to carry out our responsibilities under the Building Act 1993 (Vic) and other laws relating to our business.

We may be unable to carry out our responsibilities, including assessing, processing and deciding applications, if any of the relevant required information is not provided.

We collect personal information from individuals, companies or their authorised agents, for purposes including processing applications for building permit numbers and the registration of building practitioners.

We may also use personal information for the following purposes:

  1. To enable us to meet our statutory obligations, functions and perform our operational requirements
  2. Researching and assessing the merit and impact of proposed regulatory reforms and assisting in the development and delivery of services (whether to you personally or a member of the public)
  3. Law enforcement by us or other regulatory bodies, including prosecutions or disciplinary action against you if required
  4. Maintaining disciplinary and licensing, and registration registers for building and plumbing practitioners (published on this website)
  5. Such other purposes as required by law or authorised under the privacy legislation.

We may also share your personal information with third parties including, but not limited to, our different business units, Services Victoria, the Building Appeals Board, Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority, professional or industry bodies, your insurer, other regulators (both in Victoria and interstate), your clients or customers and our staff and/or service providers who need to know such information to perform services.

We will only disclose personal information to a third party claiming to act on behalf of a person (for example, an agent or interpreter) with prior written consent, unless it is otherwise apparent that the third party has the authority to act on your behalf.

Individuals (or their authorised representatives) can request access to their personal information. If the personal information held by us is not accurate, complete or up to date, a request can be made to amend it.
