AS/NZS 5601 amendment 2

Significant changes have been made to AS/NZS 5601 to improve consumer safety and to clarify aspects of gasfitting work.

AS/NZS 5601 amendment 2 2024

In September 2024, Standards Australia published amendment 2 to the Gas Installation Standards AS/NZS5601.1 

  • Gas Installations: General installations and AS/NZS5601.2 
  • Gas Installations: LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes.

Key changes

AS/NZS 5601.1:2022

5.2.11

Provides clarity on active fire systems and references DIN 30652-1 [excess flow valves for gas installations] as the standard that fire emergency isolation must comply with.

Clarifies the requirements for reversion fittings and explains that copper pipework must be extended from any wall outlet to 1m within the wall.

6.2.4

Prohibits the installation of flueless space heaters in certain locations and introduces new flue clearance requirements from batteries and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Introduces new provisions for small gas driven engine appliances.

Clause 6.10.1.1

Introduces provisions for down-draught extraction systems.

Clause 6.10.9.5

Clarifies when ventilation is not required for flame effect fires.

AS/NZS 5601.2:2022

For appliance, hazardous area and living space.

Clarifies measurement requirements for vapour barriers.

Materials for piping systems in caravans has had multiple amendments to pipe, section and fitting limitations.

Provides clarity on room sealed appliances and ventilation of living spaces.

Introduces new requirements for annex ventilation.
