Permitted assessment reference materials

Building Practitioner Classes

What are permitted assessment reference materials?

During your BPC exam and/or interview, you will be required to demonstrate that you can correctly locate and interpret information from relevant reference materials, such as:

  • Acts and regulations
  • The National Construction Code (NCC)
  • Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) standards and protocols
  • Australian Standards
  • BPC guide to standards and tolerances - 2015 'under review' version.

For online exams, you may access these documents at any time by clicking on the book icon at the top-right of the screen, and may only access them via approved websites. This will be demonstrated in the untimed introduction section of the exam.

You are not allowed to use any document or information source unless listed as a permitted reference, including:

  • other file formats or platforms to access reference material
  • internet search websites
  • webpages except the following:
    • Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) website
    • Standards Australia website or one of their authorised distributors
    • Victorian legislation website
    • BPC website
  • artificial intelligence (AI) software or websites.

Australian Standards

To access Australian Standards online during the exam you will be required to have an active subscription or have purchased an online accessible version. Australian Standards subscriptions or purchases can be organised via Standards Australia or one of their authorised distributors. Payment for access to Australian Standards is the sole responsibility of the test taker.

Tip: Ensure you know your login credentials before the exam as you will be required to enter your user name and password when trying to access the standards during the exam.

Note

Printed and PDF (saved to your computer) versions are not permitted for online exams.

However, the BPC will allow applicants who have their own hard copy reference materials to attend an exam at a BPC location for a transitional period.

If you can only access Australian Standards in hard copy, please contact the BPC at onlineexams@bpc.vic.gov.au. You will be required to take your exam in person.

After the transition period, the BPC will no longer provide the option to complete the exam in person for this reason.

Interviews

You may bring printed permitted materials and also bring a copy of your evidence portfolio and other relevant project documentation. This documentation should be organised by project and in a way that allows you to quickly locate a document that may be referred to in an interview.

Where to obtain permitted reference material documents

See the Building regulatory framework for an overview of the Victorian Regulatory Framework.

Which NCC version?
