Mechanical services - restricted to single head split systems work

This restricted class allows you to carry out the following components of the class of mechanical services.

  1. The installation, commissioning and any incidental design work that is associated with the installation and commissioning of:
    • any part of a single head split system appliance to a capacity of 18KW (cooling)
    • a ceiling cassette system
    • an add-on condenser unit for a ducted system.
  2. Any design work that is incidental to, or associated with, any work described in paragraph (a).

This work does not include:

Any other components of Mechanical services work.

Typical work under this restricted class

Areas of experience (AoEs)

Persons registered or licensed in this class typically carry out the following work:

  • Install, test and/or commission the single head split refrigerated air-conditioning, and/or cassette systems.
  • Install roof and/or wall flashing for any associated pipe work.
  • Copper brazing with the use of nitrogen.

Compliance requirements

Registered and licensed practitioners in this class must interpret and apply the compliance requirements for this class outlined in:

  • Building Act 1993 (Vic)
  • Victorian Plumbing Regulations 2018
  • WorkSafe Victoria requirements for plumbing work and building construction sites
  • National Construction Code (NCC) 2022, Vol 3
  • Relevant Australian Standards (see permitted assessment reference materials).

Additional compliance requirements for licensed practitioners

Licensed practitioners hold a greater level of responsibility and must interpret and apply the following additional compliance requirements:

  • Issue compliance certificates
  • Knowledge of Performance Solutions
  • WorkSafe Victoria requirements for supervising staff (including supervision of apprentices)
  • Hold relevant insurance.

Registration and licensing requirements

All persons who apply for registration or licence in this restricted class - unless applying via mutual recognition (MR) - must successfully complete the relevant BPC exam(s). You are permitted to bring relevant reference materials to your exams.

Registration

To be eligible to apply for this restricted class, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Have at least 2 years of the required areas of experience under supervision of a plumber licensed in this restricted class, Mechanical services work or Refrigerated airconditioning work.
  • Provide a Technical referee report from a plumber licensed in this restricted class, Mechanical services work or Refrigerated airconditioning work who directly supervised your work.
  • Be able to interpret and apply the compliance requirements for this class
  • Meet one of the following education requirements:
    • Have successfully completed the prescribed units for Mechanical services relating to this work.
    • Have successfully completed prescribed units for Refrigerated airconditioning relating to this work.
    • Have successfully completed Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems.
    • Have successfully completed the prescribed safety units for this class and can demonstrate the same knowledge and skill as a person who has completed all the relevant prescribed units.
  • Hold a current ARCtick card showing one of the following refrigerant handling licences:
    • RAC01
    • RSS003

Once you submit your application, you must successfully complete the registration exams for this class.

Provisional registration

Some persons may be eligible for provisional registration (PR). PR allows you to work lawfully for up to 12 months while you are waiting to complete your BPC registration exams.

Licensing

To become licensed in this class, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Hold (or be eligible) to hold registration in this class.
  • Have an additional 24 months of practical experience.
  • Hold the prescribed units for licence in this class.

Mutual recognition

If you hold a current registration or licence in another Australian jurisdiction that the BPC recognises as equivalent to this class, you may be eligible to apply for mutual recognition (MR).
