Refrigerated air-conditioning – restricted to split system heat pump water heaters
This restricted class allows you to carry out the following components of the class of refrigerated air-conditioning.
The installation, replacement, or commissioning of a split system heat pump water heater that requires refrigerant pipework to circulate refrigerants between a unit where the vapour compression cycle takes place and a separate unit where water is either directly or indirectly heated by that refrigerant.
Any design work that is incidental to, or associated with, any work described in paragraph (a).
Not allowed under this restricted class unless additional relevant classes held:
the repair, alteration, or maintenance of any part of the internal componentry of a split system heat pump water heater described in (a) that requires the handling of refrigerants
the connection or disconnection of a water heater described in (a) to a water service
any gasfitting work required to decommission or replace a gas-fired water heater.
heat pump hot water heater installation compliance
which accreditation is required for the various types of heat pump hot water heaters.
Registration and licensing requirements
Only currently registered or licensed practitioners can apply for this class of registration.
People applying for a class that provides eligibility to refrigerated air-conditioning – restricted to split system heat pump water heaters will be automatically granted this class as part of their application.
Registration
To be eligible to apply for this restricted class, you must meet the following conditions:
Hold registration in:
Mechanical services work or
Mechanical services – restricted to single head split systems work or
Refrigerated air-conditioning - restricted to basic systems.
Practitioners must also be registered or licensed in:
Water supply – to connect or disconnect hot water heaters to the water supply, and licensed to submit a compliance certificate for the connection or disconnection.
Gasfitting – to decommission gas-fired water heaters, and licensed to submit a compliance certificate for the decommissioning work.
If the refrigerants in the split system heat pump water heaters being installed and commissioned are ozone depleting refrigerants, practitioners are required to hold an appropriate ARCTick licence:
To become licensed in this restricted class, you must meet the following conditions:
Hold licence in:
Mechanical services work or
Mechanical services – restricted to single head split systems work or
Refrigerated air-conditioning restricted to basic systems.
Practitioners must be registered or licensed in:
Water supply – to connect or disconnect hot water heaters to the water supply, and licensed to submit a compliance certificate for the connection or disconnection.
Gasfitting – to decommission gas-fired water heaters, and licensed to submit a compliance certificate for the decommissioning work.
If the refrigerants in the split system heat pump water heaters being installed and commissioned are ozone depleting refrigerants, practitioners are required to hold an appropriate ARCTick licence.
Any electrical work would need to be carried out by an appropriately licensed electrician.
Mutual recognition
If you hold a current registration or licence in another Australian jurisdiction that the BPC recognises as equivalent to this class, you may be eligible to apply for Mutual Recognition (MR).
ID cards and compliance certificates
Practitioners granted this restricted class:
Will have this restricted class listed in their accreditations on the find a practitioner tool – this can be used to confirm your accreditation with customers.
Will not be issued a plumbing practitioner identification card listing this class until future enhancements are made to BPC systems.
Will not see this restricted class in VBA360 when lodging a compliance certificate. When lodging a compliance certificate for split system heat pump water heaters, one of the following classes will need to be ticked, until future enhancements are made to BPC systems:
Mechanical services or
Mechanical services – restricted to single head split systems work or
Refrigerated air-conditioning – restricted to basic systems.
The BPC will notify practitioners once these system changes are made.
